Paws and Claws Humane Society in Artesia, NM

Paws and Claws Humane Society is the only rescue group in Artesia, NM, a small rural and isolated town in southeastern New Mexico.  This organization works tirelessly to help save the many homeless dogs and cats that enter the Artesia Shelter each year.  In 2011, Paws and Claws was able to achieve a 94% rescue/save rate for all dogs coming into the shelter!  This is a HUGE feat for such a small, rural shelter, but it takes lots of money to fulfill this task.  The staff at the Paws and Claws who network the animals, must be able to cover the costs of the immunizations, heartworm tests, microchips and spay/neuter which are necessary to help get them placed into rescues.  This doesn't include the added cost of transporting all the rescued animals from Artesia to northern New Mexico and even into Colorado.  A transport to Colorado usually runs as much as $200.00 per trip and a short trip to Albuquerque cost about $100.00.  The shelter does weekly trips at a minimum and sometimes they will do two or more in a week.  Paws and Claws has also worked to try and save all of the wonderful domestic cats and kittens that enter the shelter too.  Again, they desperately need donations to help cover the costs of their spay and neuters, FIV/LEU testing and microchips.  Paws and Claws has partnered with PetSense in Hobbs, NM which can provide an opportunity for the adoptable cats to find a loving home, but this too, has the added expense of transporting the felines.

Paws and Claws is a tiny shelter and fills up in the afternoon with many deserving dogs out of time and facing euthanasia.  This rescue will often put adoptable animals in boarding until space becomes available either in their shelter or in another rescue shelter. Additionally they purchased a cat house to help house felines while they wait for room to open up at PetSense, or better yet, a perfect adopter.  Both of these options are expensive and Paws and Claws is always looking for sponsors to help with the costs to maintain the amazing save rate this tiny rural community rescue group has been able to achieve.

Paws and Claws is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit charity and all donations are tax deductible to the extent allowed applicable law.
